Career: At the age of 15 Rihanna was introduced to the New York based producer Evan Rogers during his holiday in Barbados. A few months later, Rihanna flew to the USA for a recording session and after turning 16 she moved to the USA and she stayed with Rogers and his wife. Rogers sent her demo to all the major record labels which drew Rihanna to the attention of Def Jam’s CEO Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. He invited her to an audition and to discuss to sign up Rihanna with his record label, Def Jam Records. Jay-Z was impressed with Rihanna’s natural talent and knew within minutes that she would be very successful. Within hours she signed her contract with Def Jam Records…a star was born.
The following three months she spent on recording her debut album Music of the Sun which was released in 2005 in the USA. In August 2005, she released her debut single “Pon de Replay” which was a major success. One month after the release of her first album she right away started to work on her second album A Girl Like Me. During the recording process she also served as an opening act for Gwen Stefani to promote her debut album. The second album was released in 2006. The lead single of the second album, namely “SOS”, became Rihanna’s first number one hit in the USA. The second hit “Unfaithful” became a major worldwide hit, reaching the top ten in many countries. From November 2006 to February 2007 she toured with the Pussycat Dolls in the UK.
In August 2006 the film Bring It On: All or Nothing was released in which Rihanna made her acting debut in a cameo role.
In 2006 she also created her Believe Foundation, to help terminally ill children.
She won the Award for Female Breakout Artist and Choice R&B Artist from the Teen Choice Awards in 2006 and various awards at the Barbados Music Awards. Rihanna also won the Female Artist of the Year, Pop 100 Artist of the Year and Female Hot 100 Artist of the Year of the Billboard Music Awards in 2006.
In June 2007 she released her third album Good Girl Gone Bad. The music in this album was more dance-pop music. She wrote the songs with Ne-Yo. She worked on the album with Timbaland, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and as before with Stargate, Carl Sturken and Even Rogers. The album was number one of the charts in the UK, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Russia and Ireland and reached number two in the United States and Australia. The album had eight hit singles, all reaching the top twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 which also included the worldwide number-one hit “Umbrella”, featuring Jay-Z. She won a Grammy in Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for Umbrella in 2008.
In 2007 and 2008 she won the Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B award of the American Music Awards and the Favorite Pop/Rock award in 2008. She also won several MTV awards in 2006 and 2007.
In March 2009 she started to work in the studio on her forth album Rated R. She worked with numerous producers, including Stargate, Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, Ne-Yo, Slash, Justin Timberlake, Chase & Status and Akon. Rated R was released in November 2009. The albums lead single Russian Roulette was released in October 2009.
In 2009 Rihanna also collaborated with Jay-Z and Kanye West on “Run This Town”. The song was number two on Billboard Hot 100. She was on the cover of Vogue Italia in September 2009 issue.
At the Urban Music Awards she won in 2009 the Best Music Video Award as well as the Best Female Act.
In January 2010 she features in the issue of GQ magazine.
